On 29 June, the US Supreme Court made a decision that barely made headlines outside law firms, and it threatens the legal foundation that lets your data move between the UK, the EU, and the US.
The Court ruled that the president can fire commissioners at the Federal Trade Commission whenever he wants, ending ninety years of independence for that agency. That independence was not a side detail. When Europe signed its Data Privacy Framework deal with America in 2023, it cited FTC independence 259 times as the guarantee that American data handling would stay fair and apolitical.
That guarantee is gone. Within a day, the privacy group noyb told the European Commission to withdraw the agreement entirely. This is already being called Schrems III, named after the lawyer who brought down the two data deals before this one. Both fell eventually. Everyone said they were safe right up until they were not.
Britain is not standing outside this either. The UK runs its own version of the same deal, called the UK-US Data Bridge, built on the exact same guarantee that just disappeared.
Nothing has been struck down yet. The framework remains legally valid today. But the foundation it stood on just cracked in three countries at once, and the people who broke the last two versions of this deal are already circling.
