I gave myself three minutes to make the case for this one, because if I cannot say it in three minutes, I probably do not believe it enough.
Your most valuable asset is not your company or your capital. It is your time. And most of it disappears into other people’s priorities before you even notice it is gone.
Two things fix most of that.
First, train the people around you on how to contact you. Most executives never do this, so everyone defaults to the fastest channel, which is usually the worst one. Different channels for different priorities. A message that can wait goes somewhere that does not buzz your phone. A genuine emergency gets its own protocol, so it actually stands out. You are not being rude by setting this up. You are being clear.
Second, and this is the one people resist, protect your downtime like it is a meeting with your most important client. Because it is. Disconnecting is not a break from the work, it is part of the work. Your brain does not process, plan, or solve anything while it is still half looking at a screen.
If you already know your boundaries, ask an AI assistant to look at your calendar and your task list and build a pre-optimised day around them. Not a generic schedule. One built around the boundaries you just set.
None of it works if you do not actually protect the time once you have carved it out. That is the whole point. You cannot build anything real, in your work or in who you are, if your attention is never actually yours.
